The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Neutersol (zinc gluconate neutralized by arginine) as the first injectable neutering drug for puppies 3 to 10 months of age. Addison Biological Laboratory, Inc. will market the product in the United States. With the puppy lying on its back and properly restrained (chemical restraint should be used, if necessary, to prevent the dog from moving during the injection), the veterinarian gently injects Neutersol into each of the testicles using a very fine needle. The exact dose is pre-calibrated by measuring the width of the puppys testicles using a custom dosing caliper. Neutersol is 99.6 percent effective in achieving sterilization, the company says.Employing Neutersol also provides the veterinarian with significant time and cost savings for his or her practice for the same fee charged for traditional surgery. Increased efficiency gives the veterinarian more time to see additional patients, be more productive, and increase revenues for the practice.Neutersol was developed by the late Dr. Mostafa S. Fahim, director of the Center of Reproductive Science and Technology, School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Columbia. The long process of obtaining FDA approval of Neutersol began in 1991, and Technology Transfer, Inc. licensed Addison to market the product.Mild, temporary swelling of the testicles is an expected reaction to the injection noticed within 24 to 48 hours after injection. Other possible side effects include vomiting, anorexia, lethargy, diarrhea, scrotal pain and scrotal inflammation, the company says.Neutersol is available to veterinarians through their local veterinary distributors and comes with comprehensive product details, a custom dosing caliper, professional training video, client education and marketing support materials in a starter kit upon initial purchase.
