The purpose of this on-demand AVMA course by Dr. J. Paul Spurlock is to identify and discuss those zoonoses of public health concern that private practice veterinarians in the United States may encounter at the clinic or in the field, to provide resources for improving zoonotic disease prevention both in the general public and among veterinary personnel, and to identify readily available, authoritative references that may be accessed for little to no cost. Many communicable viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic agents are transmitted from animals to humans, and veterinarians are increasingly playing a critical and key role in protecting the public health while caring for non-human patients.
