Veterinarian Ranks High Among Best Jobs of 2018

Of the 100 best jobs of 2018, veterinarian ranked in the top third.

Every year, US News & World Report analyzes the job market and future job market outlook to rank the 100 best jobs. This year, veterinarians made the list at No. 30.

For its ranking, analysts looked at which jobs had the largest projected number of openings from 2016 to 2026 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. If the job topped that list, it was selected.

Analysts then looked at several factors for each of those jobs, such as median salary, unemployment rate, 10-year growth volume, 10-year growth percentage, future job prospects, stress level and work-life balance.

While the top five jobs went to software developers, dentists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and orthodontists, the job of veterinarian was highly ranked and recognized.

Veterinarians received a 6.8/10 overall rating—scoring 7.4 for salary, 6 for job market, 6 for future growth, 4 for stress and 4 for work-life balance.

The report provided statistics about the 2018 jobs outlook for veterinarians:

  • Projected Jobs: 14,400
  • Median Salary: $88,770
  • Unemployment Rate: 0.4%

Veterinarians also ranked No. 20 on the list of the 25 best health care jobs of 2018, beating out radiation therapists, nurse midwifes, speech-language pathologists, pharmacists and chiropractors.
