Vet Treks Foundation returns from Kenya
The veterinary volunteer group returns from a trip to Kenya

Vet Treks Foundation announced its return from a June trip to Kenya after completing its Machakos County Sterilization and Anti-Rabies campaign, in collaboration with Africa Network (ANAW). The clinic was held on a soccer field in Massi Town in rural Machakos Country consisting of 5 local veterinarians and 20 volunteers from the United States and the United Kingdom. According to an organizational release, volunteers included 10 veterinarians, 3 veterinary technicians, and 7 'animal lovers'.1
“This is great progress toward our mission of getting trained, experienced local vets and techs out into the communities doing this important work in Kenya!” said Lisa McCarthy, DVM, MBA, founder of Vet Treks, in the release.
The volunteers sterilized 180 dogs and cats; vaccinated 800 dogs, 140 cats, and 1978 donkeys against rabies; and 778 dogs against parvo and distemper.1 The volunteers also gave formal training to local veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and students along with hands-on practice with surgery, anesthetic protocols, and monitoring.
After completing the trip, Vet Treks Foundation donated the bulk of the left-over supplies and all surgical instruments to veterinarians working across Kenya.
