The goal of this course is to provide the general practitioner with the knowledge and skills needed to a) diagnose and stage many common types of cancer, and based on those findings, b) determine the most appropriate surgical intervention indicated. This course will be team-taught by a board certified surgeon with extensive experience in surgical oncology and a board certified medical oncologist. The course faculty will present principles of surgical oncology including recommended techniques for sampling lymph nodes as well as bone, bladder, and skin masses. Appropriate disease staging, biologic behavior, and surgical excision of mast cell tumors, mesenchymal tumors, digital tumors, anal sac tumors, perianal tumors, and cutaneous melanoma will be reviewed. Adjuvant therapy (chemotherapy, radiation, melanoma vaccine) will be presented as indicated. Surgical treatment of masses located in high-tension and high-motion areas will be discussed. Participants will practice basic tension relieving techniques, appropriate wound closure, and techniques for specific clinical problems. Surgical management of osteosarcoma, histiocytic sarcoma, and synovial cell sarcoma will be discussed. Limb and digital amputation techniques and indications will be discussed and practiced in the laboratory.
