Second Hemodialysis Academy Begins Through UC Davis

September 26, 2016

Date: September 26 - August 16, 2016

Description:

The second installment of the UC Davis Hemodialysis Academy will commence on September 15, 2016 and run through August 16, 2017. The 11-month online course is an intensive curriculum on veterinary blood purification therapies. The advanced certification program for extracorporeal therapies offers more than 150 hours of certified instruction from leading renal medicine veterinarians throughout the world. The academy consists of in-depth instruction on the principles, basic science, and clinical applications of intermittent hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, hemoperfusion, therapeutic apheresis, acute and chronic kidney failure, and operation of a hemodialysis program. For three days a week over nearly a year, course enrollees will participate online in lectures and discussions on Mondays and Wednesdays, with extracorporeal rounds and group discussions on Fridays. The web-based curriculum is a combination of live, interactive, archived, and self-paced modules, and is available to veterinarians worldwide. This years academy has 111 registered veterinarians from more than 20 countries. The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), along with the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, is offering the academy in collaboration with The Ohio State University, UC Veterinary Medical Center - San Diego, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, University of Bern (Switzerland), Tufts University, and Friendship Hospital (Washington, DC). Following completion of the academy, participants will be presented certification by UC Davis for Achievement in Hemodialysis, demonstrating aptitude and competency in the principles of extracorporeal therapies and their veterinary applications.I definitely found the quality of the course to be as good as any I have experienced, said Dr. Seth Ghantous of Chicago, who completed the first Hemodialysis Academy. The foundation of knowledge that was provided was outstanding, and the level of commitment from the instructors was really impressive. Having these skills is definitely a way to separate myself from the growing pack of internists.Instructors in the academy include: Larry D. Cowgill, DVM, PhD, DACVIM UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and UC Veterinary Medical Center - San Diego JD Foster, VMD, DACVIM Friendship Hospital Segev Gilad, DVM, DECVIM-CA Hebrew University of Jerusalem Thierry Francey, DrMedVet, DACVIM, DECVIM-CA University of Bern Mary Anna Labato, DVM, DACVIM Tufts University Cathy Langston, DVM, DACVIM The Ohio State University Carrie Palm, DVM, DACVIM UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Sheri Ross, DVM, PhD, DACVIM UC Veterinary Medical Center - San DiegoAs part of the SVMs strategic plan, these types of continuing education opportunities allow the school to design curriculum and training programs to address future societal needs and educate world leaders in the latest advancements in veterinary medicine.
