Ross University hosts week-long One Health Day celebration

November 5, 2021
dvm360 Staff

In light of One Health Day on November 3, 2021, the veterinary school continues its week-long tradition of bringing community leaders, faculty, researchers, and students together to highlight One Health initiatives.

Each year, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) holds a week-long themed event to commemorate One Health Day. The event, which is held in tandem with RUSVM’s Research Week, is hosting in-person and online events that roll out on November 1, 2021, and will end today, November 5, 2021. This year’s celebration theme is “One Health: Food for Thought” which focuses on food security and safety.

“We are thrilled to be hosting a week of activities in honor of One Health Day and to bring together community leaders, educators, researchers, and students to share knowledge and inspire further advancement of our collective efforts," shared Sean Callahan, MVB, MRCVS, CERTVR, PHD, DIPECVP, FRCPATH, dean of RUSVM, to dvm360® staff.

Throughout the week, students learn about introducing new animals to the island community of St. Kitts (where RUSVM is located), food security and health linkages in crop farming, and growing green tilapia as part of aquaculture practices. Additionally, RUSVM believes the island location offers unique learning opportunities for One Health initiatives and fits the school's mission of promoting a sustainable environment.

“Our location in the Caribbean provides students and the communities we serve a unique opportunity to collaborate on One Health approaches that are vitally important to this part of the world,” noted Callahan.

“Whether it is through research or community-based efforts, students have regular opportunities to better understand and contribute to actions that recognize the intricate connections between humans, animals, and the ecosystem. In doing so, they solidify a sense of global stewardship as it relates to the region’s marine life, cattle breeding efforts, and the environment,” he continued.
