SACRAMENTO, CALIF. — The repeal date on rules that allow registered veterinary technicians or unregistered assistants to administer controlled drugs under either direct or indirect supervision of a veterinarian has been extended following the passage of Senate Bill 943.

Originally proposed in 2007, the law allows registered veterinary technicians or unregistered assistants to administer controlled substances under the direct or indirect supervision of a licensed veterinarian. The law prohibits anyone other than a licensed veterinarian from inducing anesthesia.

The bill, approved Sept. 26, extends the repeal date of the law until Jan. 1, 2013.
