RECALL: United Pet Group Recalls Rawhide Chew Products

June 12, 2017
American Veterinarian Editorial Staff

Due to potential contamination with quaternary ammonium compounds, United Pet Group has voluntarily recalled several brands of its rawhide dog chew products.

United Pet Group, a global marketer and manufacturer of pet supplies, has voluntarily recalled several brands of its dog chew products that contain rawhide.

The recall was initiated after the company identified that some of its manufacturing facilities in Mexico and Colombia, and one of its suppliers in Brazil, were using a quaternary ammonium compound mixture as a processing aid for the dog chews. Ingestion of quaternary ammonium compounds, which are often used to clean food-processing equipment, may cause such clinical signs in dogs as reduced appetite, diarrhea, and vomiting.

United Pet Group has received limited reports of illness based on the affected rawhide products. The primary consumer complaint was an unpleasant odor; other complaints included diarrhea and vomiting following ingestion.

The products being recalled are as follows:Brands Product Names and Identifying Information
