Each of the Iditarod teams started with 16 dogs.

Each of the Iditarod teams started with 16 dogs. If a musher decided to drop one of the dogs from the team, they are placed in the custody of the attending veterinarian. The dogs are then transported back to Anchorage to await their owners.
