Fetch Nashville

Elizabeth Wright Smith, DVM, MS, joins Adam Christman, DVM, MBA, to break down how a hyaluronic acid gel is changing dental procedures for dogs and cats.

This episode is sponsored by PerioVive

On this episode of Vet Blast presented by dvm360, and recorded live at Fetch Nashville, host Adam Christman, DVM, MBA, talks with Elizabeth Wright Smith, DVM, MS, chief veterinary officer of Periovive, about the company's hyaluronic acid gel and its growing role in dental care. They cover how the product doubles tissue regeneration and repair in periodontal pockets and furcation defects, the economics of using it in practice, and what's coming next, including a gingivitis water supplement and a bone-graft combination product.

The duo also then discusses its use for chronic conditions like feline gingival stomatitis and canine chronic ulcerative stomatitis, plus ongoing research into radiation-induced mucositis and full-mouth extractions for stomatitis in cats.

Below is a partial transcript, edited lightly for clarity.

Adam Christman, DVM, MBA: Thanks for joining us. So, how did you become involved with PerioVive?

Elizabeth Wright Smith, DVM, MS: Well, it's kind of a funny story. The CEO and the originator of PerioVive is an MD by trade, Brian Song worked in the human biopharm industry, and he found that there were a number of products that were tested on dogs, and then once they got promoted to human trials, it was totally forgotten about, just dropped, and he thought, well, that's wrong, they're experimenting on the dogs, they should be able to benefit from these products, and he decided that would be a really good product to develop.

Christman: And what is it?

Wright Smith: Periovive is a hyaluronic acid, it's a dental adjuvant, it's a gel that's applied at the conclusion of periodontal procedures. It basically doubles the rate of tissue regeneration and repair, so it increases the efficacy of dental procedures.

Christman: Wow, which is, I think, a huge game changer for what we do. And what are some of the uses of it?

Wright Smith: It is used in periodontal pockets, pathologic pockets. It can decrease the depth of the pocket by 50%. It also increases the clinical attachment level of the tooth, because it helps to regenerate periodontal ligament like tissue, bone, and cementum. So, now we've got a tooth that's more secure in its socket.

It is used in furcation defects. You can actually close a class 1 or 2 furcation defect by doing a really good job of root planing and or open plaque debridement. Nothing's going to work if you don't get the surface clean, [if] but you do that, put in the PerioVive, and you can actually get a full closure of your class 1 and 2 furcation defects.

Christman: That's really good, because a lot of us want to try to save the teeth as best as we can. Now we have something that can help support it.
