Meet the 2026 Veterinary Heroes: Curtis Dewey, DVM, MS, CCRP, CTCVMP, DACVS, DACVIM

Dewey is dvm360's 2026 Veterinary Hero internal medicine award recipient

Curtis Dewey, DVM, MS, CCRP, CTCVMP, DACVS, DACVIM (Neurology), has spent decades shaping veterinary neurology from nearly every angle imaginable—as an educator, researcher, author, and clinician. A former faculty member at Cornell University, Texas A&M University, and Long Island University, Dewey has directly mentored generations of students, interns, and residents. He is also the author of A Practical Guide to Canine and Feline Neurology, the definitive textbook used in veterinary schools and neurology residency programs across the country.

His contributions to clinical knowledge don’t stop at the written page. Dewey’s integrative approach to medicine reflects a willingness to think beyond convention in the service of his patients. Many of his research contributions have been published in open-access journals, a deliberate choice that ensures his work reaches veterinarians everywhere. In recent years, Dewey has brought that same spirit of accessibility to his community by establishing Elemental Pet Vets in the Finger Lakes region of New York—offering the area an integrative specialty practice while employing locally and investing in the fabric of the community he calls home.

What makes Dewey’s career truly remarkable is the breadth of his impact, from the residents he has trained who have gone on to shape the specialty themselves to the pet owners in a small upstate New York community who now have access to world-class integrative care. He is, by every measure, a clinician whose influence extends far beyond the exam room.

Congratulations to Dewey from dvm360! You can check out the rest of our 2026 recipients, and learn more about Dewey here.
