Annapolis, Md. — Anyone with more than 15 unspayed female dogs over the age of 6 months will be required to obtain a state kennel license beginning Oct. 1.

Senate Bill 839 was signed into law May 10 and applies to anyone who keeps the dogs for the purpose of breeding them and selling their offspring. More specifically, the law applies to breeders who sell six or more litters per year.

The previous legislation set the bar at 10, rather than 15, unsprayed female dogs, and applied to any breeder who sold any of the dogs’ offspring. The stipulation of six or more litters per year is a new addition.
