Holiday travel: Study maps US cities with the most and cheapest pet-friendly Airbnb listings

November 17, 2021
Bob Alaburda, Senior Editor

These cities offer the best chance to find a place to stay for those traveling with their pets during the holidays.

The holiday season is right around the corner, and with it comes a nationwide travel frenzy as people rush to see their family and loved ones. But what about pet owners dealing with the added wrinkle of traveling with their 4-legged family members? A recent study by CertaPet seeks to be a guiding star, mapping out the US cities with the most abundant pet-friendly listings on Airbnb.

The research made use of the “pets allowed” filter on Airbnb to add up the number of pet-friendly Airbnb listings in 100 destination cities across the country. These numbers take each cities population into account, with the results revealing the amount of pet-friendly Airbnbs per 100,000 people. Further, the study restricted the time frame of the stay to between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Finally, researchers also recorded the nightly price of each listing to determine where pet owners can get the most bang for their buck.

Here are some key findings from the study:

  • Cannon Beach, OR, took first place with 5,902.08 pet-friendly Airbnb listings per 100,000 people.
  • With more than 2,500 Airbnb listings per 100,000 people each, the top 5 cities include Lake of the Ozarks, MO, Gatlinburg, TN, Telluride, CO, and Tybee Island, GA.
  • When not controlling for population, Cape Cod, MA, Miami Beach, FL, Asheville, NC, Nashville, TN, and Charleston, SC are the top 5 cities for pet-friendly Airbnb listings.
  • The title of most expensive pet-friendly Airbnb city belongs to Aspen, CO, with an average price just over $1,200 per night during the holiday season.
  • Rounding out the top 5 most expensive are Montauk, NY, Shelter Island, NY, Key West, FL, and Lake Tahoe, CA.
  • The least expensive pet-friendly Airbnb cities include Cheyenne, WY, Oklahoma City, OK, and Omaha, NE.
