High Risk Anaesthesia

April 26, 2016

Date: June 13 - June 27, 2016

COURSE SUMMARYIt's 7pm on a Thursday evening, and everyone else has left except you and the vet on duty. An emergency has been rushed in. A dog with a deep laceration to his shoulder, with active haemorrhage. The dog appears shocked and the owners say he's already lost quite a lot of blood. He needs anaesthesia and surgery straight away to repair the wound and arrest the haemorrhage. Help!Anaesthesia of high risk patients is an area where vet nurses and techs need to feel confident and competent, and clear protocols for dealing with these patients are also of great importance to ensure safety and consistency. This course will focus on anaesthesia of patients that are deemed to be a poor anaesthetic risk and will pay particular attention to conditions such as GDV, sepsis, shock and hypovolaemia. You will explore haemodynamic complications that occur and discuss ways in which these patients can be managed under anaesthesia in order to minimise such problems. This will include patient stabilisation prior to anaesthesia and methods used to monitor them perioperatively in order to recognise potential complications. The different types of shock will be considered, together with appropriate management. With the guidance of your tutor, you will then go on to formulate your own outline protocols for management of anaesthesia in high-risk patients that are tailored to the facilities in your clinic. LEARNING OUTCOMESBy the end of this module, successful candidates will be able to: Appreciate the different physiological implications for a variety of high risk patients Understand the importance of pre-operative patient stabilisation, and how to achieve this Have awareness of the effects of different anaesthetic drugs and techniques on the patient Monitor the patient for perioperative complications and appreciate the appropriate actions that can be takenWhat do previous participants think of this course?"Fantastic course.
