FDA-approved sevoflurane inhalant anesthetic for dogs enters veterinary market
The newly launched product is indicated for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in dogs and expands the range of inhalant anesthetic options available to veterinary practices.
Parnell has expanded its companion animal anesthesia portfolio with the launch of Sevoflurane Inhalation Anesthetic, an FDA-approved inhalant anesthetic indicated for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in dogs.
According to the company, the addition gives veterinary practices access to another commonly used anesthetic agent alongside Parnell's existing anesthesia and sedation offerings, which include PropofolVet Multidose, dexmedetomidine hydrochloride injection, CONTRASED (atipamezole hydrochloride), and Isoflurane Inhalation Anesthetic.1
The product received FDA approval under ANADA #200-830 on January 30, 2026.2
Sevoflurane is a volatile inhalant anesthetic known for its rapid induction and recovery characteristics. The product is supplied as a clear, colorless liquid in 250 mL bottles and is classified as nonflammable and nonexplosive under International Electrotechnical Commission standards.
The drug is indicated for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in dogs. Label directions state that mask induction may be achieved using inspired concentrations of up to 7% sevoflurane with oxygen, while maintenance concentrations generally range from 3.3% to 4.0%, depending on patient factors and premedication protocols.3
As with other inhalant anesthetics, patient monitoring is required throughout administration. The label notes that sevoflurane is a potent respiratory depressant and that changes in anesthetic depth, blood pressure, and respiratory rate may occur rapidly because of its low blood solubility.3 The most commonly reported adverse reactions during maintenance anesthesia include hypotension, tachypnea, muscle tenseness, excitation, apnea, muscle fasciculations, and emesis.3
Parnell is also promoting its Foundations of Anesthesia & Sedation Certificate Program alongside the launch. The online program provides 10 RACE-approved continuing education hours and is designed to support veterinary team training in anesthesia and sedation protocols.
"Veterinary professionals place immense trust in the products they use during anesthesia, and that responsibility drives everything we do," Pablo Lamberto, DVM, US general manager at Parnell, said in a company release.1
