Through a recent grant, PetSmart Charities donated a new clinic space to Emancipet. The new Emancipet clinic opened on April 13, 2022, inside the PetSmart retail store in Houston, TX located at 13830 Northwest Freeway. This Houston area faced hardships from the hurricane disaster in 2017, which resulted in a loss of several resources, including affordable local veterinary clinics.

Emancipet is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1999, whose mission is: “to make veterinary care affordable and accessible for everyone.”1 The organization hopes to establish low-cost veterinary care systems across the nation, especially in “underserved areas.” To help Emancipet achieve this goal, PetSmart Charities donated a new clinic space within their retail store located in Houston, TX. PetSmart Charities also donated an additional clinic coming this July located in Philadelphia, PA.

PetSmart Charities has granted over $500 million since its founding in 1994 and has recently announced a new business focus on “improving access to veterinary care in the United States and Canada.”1 PetSmart Charities provides grant funding to support organizations, like Emancipet, that advocate and care for the well-being of all pets and their families.

The clinic will provide primary care services for cats and dogs including annual examinations, vaccinations, and treatment for common conditions such as skin and ear infections. Also available at the clinic are spay and neuter services.

Angelita Sampaio, vice president at Emancipet Houston commented on the clinic’s opening saying, “The clinic that was formerly located at this PetSmart store closed during Hurricane Harvey and never reopened, leaving many families without access to affordable veterinary care.”1

Aimee Gilbreath, president at PetSmart Charities also remarked on the collaboration, stating, “We’re leveraging collaborations like these to create innovative solutions that merge the efforts of philanthropy and business.”1 Emancipet and PetSmart Charities hope to combine their goals and aid pet owners who struggle to afford basic veterinary care.
