Dog owners don't understand Lyme disease prevention

Survey reveals understanding of risks, but prevention awareness falls short.

April is Prevent Lyme in Dogs Month and a big part of preventing Lyme disease is helping your clients understanding how to do just that. But a recent survey of dog owners by WMS Marketing Services for Merial reveals that dog owners' understanding of preventive measures falls short. More than 55 percent don't vaccinate their dogs or are unsure if they vaccinate their dogs against Lyme disease. And for dog owners who don't vaccinate their dogs against the disease, 30 percent have no specific reason for not doing so.

So the door is wide open for you to educate clients about preventing Lyme disease. According to the survey, 95 percent of dog owners were aware that certain tick species carry and transmit the disease. Your clients may already understand some attributes of Lyme disease, so help them go a step further and and prevent the disease in their dogs.
