Amblyomma maculatum is a hard tick with an ornately patterned scutum and long mouthparts. Named the Gulf Coast tick because of a historic range largely limited to areas along the southern coast of the United States, A. maculatum has spread in recent decades northward and eastward to now inhabit a range that includes parts of Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Kansas, and Oklahoma.11, 13 Although commonly found in Oklahoma and Texas, this tick has not yet established in the southwestern United States.13
