Try again. Benzodiazepines are contraindicated in this case because endogenous benzodiazepines may contribute to the development of hepatic encephalopathy. Active seizures in dogs with portosystemic shunts can be treated with phenobarbital (loading dose), propofol, or levetiracetam.
