Calculate the calories pets need

To determine how many calories dogs or cats should consume daily for weight loss, the veterinarian must first determine the pet's ideal or target weight. Then enter that number into the formulas below.

Formula for weight loss in dogs

1. Ideal weight in pounds ÷ 2.2 = weight in kilograms

2. 30 (body weight in kilograms) + 70 = RER in kcal/day and calories to feed

Formula for weight loss in cats

1. Ideal weight in pounds ÷ 2.2 = weight in kilograms

2. 30 (ideal or target body weight in kilograms) + 70 = RER in kcal/day

3. RER in kcal/day × 0.8 = calories to feed
