BizQuiz: Is stationary or mobile equine veterinary practice right for you? (Results)

October 18, 2011

See what your results mean in "BizQuiz: Is stationary or mobile equine veterinary practice right for you?"

If you answered mostly A's, the high overhead of a stationary practice, the headache of a larger staff, and the disconnect between you and horses in their home environments may not be your cup of tea. If you want to keep sicker horses in a facility away from their home, consider leasing space from another hospital or joining with other ambulatory practitioners to share hospital space and staff.

Either way, remember to enjoy the life of the mobile practitioner having made a sound decision to live your own dream of veterinary practice.

If you answered mostly B's, you and your clients may be ready to take the next step: a stationary equine hospital you own with a talented team, larger and more capable equipment, and a better space to work with horses who need the best medical care around.

And remember: Just because you've leased or built your own hospital doesn't mean you can't spend some time in the field with the clients you love.

In the end, deciding between a haul-in or mobile practice comes down to your personal preference and your clientele. Investigate local horse owners' needs and wants, along with their available income and how many of them there are. Enlist an advisor to help in making this decision. Keep your goals and motivations in mind, and don't be afraid of change.

Just because you're driving around now doesn't mean you can't set up permanent shop, and just because you're looking out the window of a building doesn't mean you can't hit the road. Just be savvy and strategic about your choices, and you'll find success.
