Are you smarter than your smartphone?

Article

Smartphones and touchscreen tablet devices let you text, surf the net, take pictures, and be more productive. Find out how your colleagues are branching out by using the newest technology gadgets.

Communication is changing. Smartphones and tablet computers like the iPad are transforming the way Americans expect to receive information and talk to others, and veterinarians are along for the ride. During a pet's hospitalization, most pet owners still appreciate the old-fashioned phone call from a doctor or team member. These days, though, many clients appreciate regular updates on cases through text messaging, photos of recovering pets at the hospital, and websites that let them set appointments, request drug refills, and learn about their pet's conditions on their own time, rather than in the exam room. Are you using your mobile device as much as you could?

The latest data from the 2011 Veterinary Economics Business Issues Survey shows that most veterinarians have Internet-enabled smartphones, but many are still using them exclusively for phone calls without tapping into the wealth of news-oriented apps, veterinaryspecific apps like our free dvm360 iPad app (download it at the Apple Store), and calendar and productivity features.

Other data from Advanstar Communications' “What Do Veterinarians Think?” Survey, as well as Benchmarks 2011: A Study of Well-Managed Practices, reveal even more about how veterinarians are using the newest communication technologies and what they hope to get out of them now and in the future.
