The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) announced it has tapped Tracy Turner, DVM, MS, DACVS, DACVSMR, as its 2023 vice president. He will begin his term during AAEP’s 68th Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas, at the President’s Luncheon on November 21st, 2022.

Turner founded Turner Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery in Stillwater, Minnesota in 2016, concentrating primarily on equine lameness, surgery, and sports medicine. Prior to opening his one clinic, Turner worked with Anoka Equine Veterinary Services in Elk River, Minnesota, and served on the faculty for the University of Illinois, University of Florida, and the University of Minnesota.

According to an organizational release1, Turner is an Equitarian Initiative volunteer delivering medical care to working equids as well as educating caretakers and students in developing countries. He also serves as the examining veterinarian for show jumping horses for the Fédération Equestre Internationale and has previously consulted for the U.S Equestrian Federation and USDA APHIS Horse Protection Program for Tennessee Walking Horse welfare.1

“AAEP has not only been an avenue to give back to an industry that has given much to me, but it is also an organization that positively impacts all aspects of the equine industry worldwide. It is an organization that one can go to meet, collaborate, and exchange ideas with other practitioners that share the same passion: the horse,” said Turner, in the release.1

Turner has been an AAEP member since 1986 and has held leadership positions such as a member of the 2017-2019 board of directions and the chair of the Farrier Liaison committee. He currently serves as the chair for the Equine Disease Communication Center Advisory Committee and is credited for creating the AAEP student chapter veterinary farrier short courses and laboratories. He served as the University of Minnesota’s faculty advisor for the AAEP student chapter for several years.

After serving as vice president for 2 years, Turner will assume the role of AAEP president in 2025.
