2009 Year in Review: Catastrophic injuries

Horse racing injuries only declined 3 percent in 2008 despite ongoing industry efforts targeting health and safety standards. Track surfaces, according to veterinarians and other experts, need further study. But there is no single, easy solution. Of all the injuries reported, hind-leg injuries were more common on synthetic tracks, while catastrophic front-leg injuries were more frequently reported on traditional dirt tracks.
