Stillwater, Okla. - It began with the college newspaper's interview with a philanthropist who said she wanted to redirect her $5 million gift to Oklahoma State University's Center for Veterinary Health Sciences because of the way animals used in teaching and research there were treated.

Baton Rouge, La. -- A successful surgery on a bleeding tumor in a 10-year-old Labrador Retriever earned the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine $100,000 in thanks from the dog's owners.

Columbia, Mo. -- A veterinary ophthalmologist at the University of Missouri identified a genetic link between cats and humans for two forms of retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a discovery that could lead to gene-based therapies benefiting cats and humans.

Blacksburg, Va. -- A professor of veterinary anatomy and physiology at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine was awarded the Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teaching Award, considered the nation's top veterinary teaching award.

National Report -- Researchers in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia and at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine each landed million-dollar grants to study war-related treatments.

Pullman, Wash. -- Bryan Slinker, interim dean of the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine since November, accepted the college's offer to take over the position on a permanent basis.
