The program is for high-school-aged students who are interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine
Washington State University announced a first-of-its-kind certification program available to high school-aged students. The program, "Junior Veterinary Scribe Certificate," is available to students who are 16 or 17 years old and interested in a career or secondary education in veterinary medicine.
“The Junior Veterinary Scribe Certificate is a unique opportunity that equips students with a solid foundation and the essential skills needed for a career in veterinary medicine,” said Veronica Sweeney, program administrative manager, in an organizational release.1 “The certificate is great for students who are thinking about veterinary medicine as a career path.”
The program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions within the veterinary industry such as scribe or provide a more advanced skill set for those already working inside a veterinary clinic. The certificate is now 1 of 2 currently available through WSU Veterinary Paraprofessional Certificate program.
According to the release,1 the program is made up of 10 online modules covering topics related to scribing, such as anatomy, basic pharmacology, diagnostic testing, medical records and terminology, and professionalism. The program also gives students a chance to decide whether or not a career in veterinary medicine is right for them.
“Many high school students are uncertain about their career paths after graduation,” explained Sweeney.1 “Our program offers them a unique introduction to the animal science field and helps them make informed decisions about their future.”
The program completion times will vary based on the student’s educational background and experience, but most can complete the program between 90 and 130 hours. Each student will be given up to 6 months to finish the course to accommodate different learning paces and scheduling. A parent’s consent is needed for any minors to enroll in the program, and it will cost $500.
Any interested parents, students, or veterinary professionals can learn more on the college's website.
