Veterinary Economics author pens canine fat-fighting book

Article

Chow Hounds explains the roots of pet obesity and how clients can fight it.

If the serious topic of overweight or obese pets comes up in your exam room a lot, you’re not alone. Now Dr. Ernie Ward, a Veterinary Economics Editorial Advisory Board member and frequent guest on TV’s Rachael Ray Show, has written a prescription for your clients’ pudgy pet woes.

The upcoming book Chow Hounds: Why Our Dogs Are Getting Fatter—A Vet’s Plan to Save Their Lives (Health Communications) looks at nutrition and exercise regimens for pets and emphasizes the importance of veterinarians in canine health.

Chow Hounds opens by exploring the pet obesity problem, unhealthy pet food choices, and deciphering pet food labels. Then Dr. Ward offers the details of his seven-step prescription for leaner dogs:

1. Assess the dog’s weight

2. Rule out medical problems

3. Calculate calories and set goals

4. Choose the best commercial diet

5. Make home cooking healthy

6. Increase exercise

7. Track progress

The book closes with chapters on weight-loss supplements and the conditions exacerbated by obesity.

Chow Hounds hits bookstores in April.

If the book inspires you to do more at your practice, we have the resources you need. Dr. Ward has been preaching the weight-loss gospel for years—for both you and your clients. See the Related Links below.
