A U.S.-based organization arranged for the seizure of a shipment of about 10,000 critically endangered aquatic turtles en route to China destined for food consumption in mid-December.

The $3.2 million shipment was intercepted in Hong Kong. The U.S. group, Turtle Survival Alliance had the animals shipped to a station in southern Florida in early January where they are receiving emergency veterinary care and are being prepared for distribution to conservation groups throughout North America.
