Description of course content: As a veterinary nutritionist, Dr. Cailin Heinze strives to optimize the nutritional needs of animals hospitalized at the Cummings School's Foster Hospital for Small Animals. As a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, Dr. Heinze helps to deliver the clinical service, academic teaching and research that comprise the Clinical Nutrition Service at the Foster Hospital. She earned her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania. After working in private practice for a few years, Dr. Heinze moved to the University of California at Davis for a veterinary residency in small animal clinical nutrition and a master's degree in nutritional biology. Dr. Heinze joined the Tufts faculty in early 2011, drawn by its strong reputation for excellence in both human and companion animal nutrition and the opportunity to collaborate with clinicians and scientists at the veterinary school and at surrounding research universities and institutions, including Tufts' Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy in Boston. In addition to her clinical duties, which include nutrition consultations for both hospital inpatients and outpatients, Dr. Heinze co-teaches the first year veterinary biochemistry course, is the course director for the basic nutrition course, leads elective student clinical nutrition rotations, and provides continuing education seminars for other veterinarians both locally and nationally. Her research and clinical interests include home-prepared diets, nutrition and metabolism in cancer patients, long chain fatty acids, and feeding patients with kidney disease.
