AUSTIN, TEXAS — Texas legislators hope to tackle the issue of compensation for the loss of a pet, including non-economic damages.
Senate Bill 1500 and its companion, House Bill 3622, were introduced March 10 and 11, respectively. The proposed bills would mandate that anyone who intentionally causes the death of a pet that was not a threat to a person, property or other animal is responsible for damages to the pet's owner. Damages could include non-economic damages from $500 to $5,000, including for the loss of companionship. Veterinarians and veterinary practices would be exempt from being liable for damages, according to legislation.
