Rescued horses receive free tooth cleaning

The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine has forged a charitable partnership with the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation to provide complementary dental services.

Through the partnership, the foundation, which rescues and finds adoptive homes for neglected horses, takes horses to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for free care by veterinary students.

"This partnership is a great collaboration," says Julie Wilson, DVM, "and allows the College of Veterinary Medicine to give our students a great learning opportunity."

She adds, "The critical point here is that many rescued horses have poor teeth, which impact their ability to chew and digest food properly, and can lead to secondary problems such as sinus infections and immune dysfunction."
