Recession-proof careers

With the unemployment rate now at 6.7 percent,1 job seekers face a tough job market. But in his new book-150 Best Recession-Proof Jobs-career expert Laurence Shatkin ranks veterinarians No. 12 and veterinary technologists and technicians No. 58. Shatkin identified the jobs based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, and then sorted them according to their economic rewards-income, job openings, and job growth.2

Additionally, veterinarians made U.S. News's list of 30 Best Careers for 2009. U.S. News selected the best using five criteria: Job satisfaction, training difficulty, prestige, job market outlook, and pay.3
