RECALL: Potential Salmonella Contamination in Pet Food
Two lots of Smallbatch Pets Chicken Blend for Dogs & Cats have been recalled due to potential contamination with Salmonella.
Smallbatch Pets Inc., a holistic pet food company based in Portland, Oregon, is voluntarily recalling 2 lots of dog and cat food due to potential contamination with Salmonella.
Salmonella can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever not only in pets that consume contaminated products but also in humans that handle the products.
Some pets may display signs of lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting; others may only experience decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain.
Infected pets can be carriers of Salmonella and infect humans or other animals in the household.
The potentially affected lots were distributed to stores in California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington; 282 cases of the product were sold between February 1 and May 5, 2017. The food is sold frozen and has the following attributes:
- 2 lb Chicken Blend for Dogs and Cats
- Lot numbers: D032, E058
- UPC code: 705105970974
- “Best by” dates: 2/1/2018, 2/27/2018
These lots were recalled after routine testing by the Food and Drug Administration revealed the presence of Salmonella.
No pet or consumer illnesses have been reported to date. Even so, Smallbatch is warning consumers to contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled product.
