Purina announces voluntary recall

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental has been recalled due to potentially elevated vitamin D

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company announced it is voluntarily recalling select lots of its Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) prescription dry dog food because of possible elevated levels of Vitamin D. Although Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient for canines, ingesting high levels can lead to help issues depending on the exposure and level of elevate Vitamin D. Vitamin D toxicity signs are vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, excessive drooling, and renal dysfunction.

Purina issued the voluntary recall after receiving 2 contacts about 2 separate cases confirming a dog suffering from Vitamin D toxicity after consuming the product and recovered once the dogs were removed from the diet. According to an organizational release, the affected dry wood has been distributed across the United States by prescription only at veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other select retailers with the ability to validate a prescription.

Pet owners in possession of the recalled product above should immediately stop feeding it to their pets and throw it away where no other animal, including wildlife, can access it. If their pet is showing signs of Vitamin D toxicity, they should contact their veterinarian. Veterinary professionals and retail partners with the affected product should remove and destroy their inventory.

Purina also disclosed that no other Purina pet care products are affected.
