March 3, 2014

Animals are taking over the Internet in all sorts of ways. Flip through our favorite memes that are sure to put a smile on your face.

In this age of booming technology and instant communication, you may hear the term "meme" (pronounced like "team") frequently-but what exactly is it?

A meme can be defined in many ways. Simply put, it's an idea, concept or action that is spread from person to person. For example, since we're specifically talking about Internet memes, this could be a photo, YouTube video or hashtag. As we see every day in our culture, mobile devices make it all the more easy for us to share information in a snap, so the definition of a meme has transformed and diversified with advances in technology.

The animal memes you're about to see are created when an Internet user takes an animal photo, adds phrases or a caption (often funny), shares it with friends through e-mail, social media or other outlets and lets the web do the work.

With increasing popularity, these memes are prone to go viral, some of them seen by millions. A number of them become chuckle-worthy icons of our Internet culture that give animals the spotlight-and us entertainment.

Join us as we count down the 17 most awesome animal memes to grace the Internet so far.

17. Doge

Introducing Doge, a meme that went viral near the end of 2013, which is most often created with this exact photo of a Shiba Inu. Just as lolcats memes usually include phrases that supposedly reflect the photographed cats' inner monologues with peculiar grammar, so does Doge.

Weird? Yes. Adorable? Definitely.

1. Grumpy Cat

Grumpy Cat, otherwise known as Tardar Sauce, gained Internet fame through memes that were created using photos of her permanent grumpy face. Named 2012's most influential cat by MSNBC and winner of BuzzFeed's Meme of the Year Award at the 2013 Webby Awards, this cranky-looking kitty is actually very sweet in real life, according to her owner-but the memes tell a different, hilariously crabby story.
