SHAWNEE MISSION, KAN. — The Food and Drug Administration approved two new topical products targeting fleas, heartworms and intestinal nematodes for both dogs and cats from Bayer Animal Health LLC.
Advantage MultiTM for Dogs Topical Solution and Advantage MultiTM for Cats Topical Solution are available by prescription only through licensed veterinarians.
Dubbed the next generation of the Advantage family, the new products combine two active ingredients (imidacloprid and moxidectin) in a monthly, all-in-one topical formulation, says Tom Hopper, Bayer's director of marketing.
Moxidectin interacts with gaba-aminobutyric acid and glutamate-gated chloride channels, which leads to opening of the chloride channels on the post-synaptic junction, the inflow of chloride ions and the induction of an irreversible resting state, Bayer explains. The result is flaccid paralysis of susceptible parasites, followed by their death and/or expulsion. The product is safe and 100-percent effective at preventing heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis in dogs and cats, the company reports.
Imidacloprid has a high affinity for the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in post-synaptic region of the nervous system of the fleas. The ensuing inhibition of cholinergic transmission in insects results in paralysis and death, Bayer adds.
In addition to helping to prevent heartworm disease in dogs, key advantages include treating and controlling:
- hookworms caused by Ancylostoma caninum and Unicaria stenocephala (adults, immature adults and fourth-stage larvae).
- roundworm infections caused by Toxocara canis (adults and fourth-stage larvae).
- roundworm infections caused by Toxocara canis (adults and fourth-stage larvae) and Toxascaris leonina (adults).
- whipworm infections caused by Trichuris vulpis (adults).
The product is safe and effective when used topically, as directed, for dogs and puppies that are at least 7 weeks of age and weigh at least 3 pounds.
For cats, Advantage Multi is designed to prevent heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis and to treat and control:
- hookworm infections caused by Ancylostoma tubaeforme (adults, immature adults and fourth-stage larvae).
- roundworm infections caused by Toxocara cati (adults and fourth-stage larvae).
- ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) infestations.
The product is packaged in six, single-dose applicator tubes available for cats weighing 5.1 to 9 pounds and 9.1 to 18 pounds, as well as three single-dose applicator tubes for kittens weighing 2 to 5 pounds.
