DES MOINES, IOWA — Lawmakers are calling for certification for pregnancy testing using ultrasound and embryo-transfer services by mandating the non-DVM performing such duties be certified by the board of veterinary medicine and work under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

The certification would require the completion of coursework at Iowa State University. The certified person also would have to be covered under a liability or malpractice insurance policy.

The Senate and House versions of the bill both were introduced Feb. 23, but the House version allows for indirect supervision by

a veterinarian.
