OLYMPIA, WASH. - 4/21/05 - Washington lawmakers have deferred a bill formalizing veterinary technician training to the House Department of Health's Sunrise Review.
House Bill 1511 requires formal education as the only way to become a veterinary technician and bans traditional on-the-job training. Under Sunrise Review, lawmakers will mull the issue and report back to the Legislature, which is scheduled to close April 24.
The Washington State Veterinary Medical Association (WSVMA) supports the measure.
In other legislative business, a license plate initiative designed to promote spay/neuter surgeries likely will pass, WSVMA Legislative Advocate Greg Hanon says. House Bill 2091 and Senate Bill 5977 would authorize "we love our pet" license plates in the state. Revenue generated from plate sales will go to qualified nonprofit organizations to reduce pet overpopulation, he says.
