Kentucky lifts ban on horses from Indiana race facility

-- Kentucky Department of Agriculture officials lifted a ban that prevented horses from Indiana’s Hoosier Park from entering Kentucky racetrack barn areas and training facilities.

Kentucky’s state veterinarian, Robert Stout, and other officials imposed the ban after 59 Hoosier Park horses were quarantined in September because one Thoroughbred horse stabled at the Anderson, Ind., track showed signs of Streptococcus equi, or strangles. Two other horses were moved to a secondary quarantine facility and one other horse among the quarantined group died of colitis.

The quarantine was lifted Oct. 26 after no additional symptoms of strangles showed up during the quarantine and a 14-day follow-up testing period.

Although the Kentucky ban was lifted, Hoosier Park horsemen were urged to check with individual Kentucky tracks to make sure their horses will be allowed on the grounds.
