Flea and tick prevention remains a foundational component of canine preventive care. Yet despite the availability of highly effective oral and topical options, maintaining uninterrupted protection in real-world settings continues to be a challenge. Missed doses, inconsistent application, lifestyle factors, and cost considerations all contribute to gaps in coverage that increase parasite exposure risk. Long duration flea and tick collars represent an established, yet increasingly relevant, preventive modality, particularly for patients and households where adherence to monthly regimens is difficult.

Fleas and ticks are ubiquitous external parasites that negatively impact our pet’s comfort, skin health, and quality of life. Beyond pruritus and flea allergy dermatitis, ectoparasites may contribute to secondary infections and exposure to vector-borne pathogens, including Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease), Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Babesia, and Rickettsia species. Although many veterinary-recommended preventives are highly effective under ideal conditions, real-world adherence often falls short. In clinical practice, protection gaps are commonly seen because of missed or delayed monthly dosing, improper topical application, potential interference from bathing or swimming, and financial barriers, particularly in multipet households These factors highlight the value of preventive options that prioritize simplicity, durability, and consistent delivery.

Insecticide delivery and mode of action for flea and tick collars

Unlike products requiring periodic re-administration, flea and tick collars deliver active ingredients gradually over time, typically via a collar-embedded release matrix for the active ingredients. Once released, the ingredients distribute across the skin and hair coat of the pet via the animal’s natural lipid layer. This topical distribution supports contact kill and repellency without requiring fleas and ticks attachment, minimal reliance on systemic absorption and reduced fluctuations in active ingredient availability compared to intermittent dosing products. When properly formulated, this delivery system offers several advantages, including but not limited to the following: continuous, topical exposure to active ingredients, reduced dependence on owner dosing compliance, and simplified preventive routines through a single application.

To achieve both flea and tick protection, dual-active ingredient approaches are common in flea and tick collars, with each active ingredient typically targeting 1 of 2 pests. For example, imidacloprid is a commonly utilized insecticide in flea and tick pet collars, which exerts efficacy against adult fleas. It acts on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, resulting in rapid neuromuscular disruption, paralysis, and death following contact. Flumethrin represents a common insecticide with efficacy against ticks, and is commonly found in a dual-active ingredient pet collar product. Flumethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid acaricide, which interferes with sodium channel function in arthropods, producing avoidance behavior that reduces attachment and feeding, followed by paralysis and death.

Preventive care strategies and considerations

From a preventive care standpoint, affordability and ease of use play a critical role in sustained protection. Long duration collars can help reduce common barriers by minimizing the need for repeated monthly purchases, simplifying flea and tick prevention routines and offering a cost-conscious option for households with multiple dogs and cats. By improving adherence, long duration collars may help close the gap between recommended and actual flea and tick protection that can increase exposure risk and allow reinfestations. In multipet households, long-duration options may also improve continuity by consolidating purchasing and administration into fewer decision points over the year.

As with any preventive, collar selection and use should be guided by a pet- and household-specific risk assessment. Key considerations include the pet’s lifestyle (eg, outdoor access, contact with wildlife, etc.), regional and seasonal parasite pressure, history of flea allergy dermatitis, prior ectoparasiticide sensitivities, and bathing/swimming frequency, with the latter reducing the efficacy duration of some collars. Veterinary teams should also reinforce that tick prevention is a layered strategy: even with consistent prevention, routine flea and tick checks and prompt removal remain advisable during periods of high exposure.

Successful integration depends on correct use and clear communication with pet owners: An emphasis on proper collar fit and monitoring for early signs of intolerance is important, particularly during the first days after application. Further, unnecessary stacking of insecticidal/acaricidal products should be avoided unless specifically indicated and supervised, and any concurrent home, yard, or premise insecticide use that may contribute to overall exposure should be disclosed to the pet parents’ veterinarian. By aligning product choice with patient risk and owner capability, long-duration collars can help narrow the gap between recommended prevention and what is realistically achieved in practice.

Adverse effects from flea and tick collars: A 3-step veterinary response

As with any pesticide product, individual sensitivities may occur. Reported adverse events are uncommon but may include, but not limited to, application site reactions (hair change, lesions, pruritus, erythema, inflammation, hemorrhage, burns, self-trauma, ulcers), behavioral disorders, lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, alopecia, hyperactivity, skin disorders, vocalization, skin lesion, and hypersalivation. To support pet safety and consistent adverse event documentation, a simple 3-step clinic protocol can be applied in most situations.

Step 1 – Remove the collar and stop exposure.

At the first suspicion of a reaction, the collar should be removed immediately to halt ongoing exposure. The same collar should not be reapplied unless the patient has fully recovered and the clinician has reassessed the likely contributors, including collar fit, concurrent application of flea/tick products, and potential environmental insecticide exposures in the home or yard. In multi-pet households, it is also important to confirm that each pet received the correct product and that no animal has been inadvertently exposed to a collar or formulation not labeled for that species.

Step 2 – Decontaminate and preserve collar.

When cutaneous signs are present, or when the collar has been worn for an extended period, bathing the pet with a mild soap and copious water followed by thorough rinsing can help reduce residual topical transfer on the coat and skin. Operators handling the collar should wash their hands afterwards. The collar and any available packaging should be placed in a sealed bag so that key identifiers, such as the lot number and EPA registration number, are preserved for the medical record and any subsequent adverse effect reporting.

Step 3 – Triage severity and respond with appropriate urgency.

Pets with mild, localized reactions, such as pruritus, erythema, or mild alopecia, limited to the collar contact area and no systemic signs can often be managed on an outpatient basis after collar removal and decontamination, with symptomatic care as clinically indicated and close monitoring. Moderate presentations, including diffuse pruritus, marked local inflammation, persistent vomiting or hypersalivation, notable lethargy, or escalating self-trauma, among others, should prompt immediate evaluation to assess hydration, temperature, neurologic status, and the extent of dermatitis, and to provide supportive care and documentation of clinical course. Severe or rapidly progressive signs, such as tremors, ataxia, seizures, weakness or collapse, dyspnea, severe agitation, repeated or hemorrhagic gastrointestinal signs, or facial swelling with airway concern, should be treated as an emergency, with stabilization initiated promptly after collar removal and decontamination, followed by appropriate monitoring and supportive care.

Documentation for adverse effect reporting

When an adverse effect is suspected following use of a flea and tick collar, timely and thorough documentation supports patient care, helps identify contributing factors, and improves the usefulness of post-market surveillance data. At minimum, record the following in the medical record and include it in the report when available:

  • Species, age, weight, breed, pregnancy/lactation status (if applicable)
  • Concurrent medications/other preventives (including OTC, supplements)
  • Exposure scenario (eg, improper fit, application of multiple collars, mouth/chewing exposure of collar, improper species use, etc.)
  • Timeline (from application to onset, duration, resolution after removal)
  • Clinical signs and severity, treatment provided, outcome
  • Product identifiers: lot number, EPA Registration Number, purchase date/source
