Idea Exchange: Handmade memorial blankets are a special way to show you care

Article

At our mainly exotics practice, we found it hard to return children's pet parakeets and hamsters to them in cardboard boxes after the pets passed away.

At our mainly exotics practice, we found it hard to return children's pet parakeets and hamsters to them in cardboard boxes after the pets passed away. Since we have a lot of crafty people in our office, we decided to knit memorial blankets for the dearly departed. The blankets are simple pieces of knitting that are stitched up like a sleeping bag and have a drawstring. They are easy to make—even a novice knitter can make one—and clients donate the yarn. We attach poems and a nametag to the string. Our clients seem to really appreciate these little burial bags, especially since they are handmade by our staff.
