Fast Company names Zoetis one of the most innovative companies in 2022

Article

The animal health company is being honored for its contributions and donations of a vaccine that helps animals fight COVID-19.

Fast Company—a business media brand – ranked Zoetis eighth in corporate social responsibly on its Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list for 2022. In a list that honors businesses making significant impacts on culture and industry, Zoetis is the only animal health company out of 528 organizations to be recognized across 52 categories and included in this year's list.

In January 2021, the San Diego Zoo requested vaccines from Zoetis after confirming gorillas at the zoo tested positive for COVID-19. Since then, Zoetis discovered, developed, and donated over 11,000 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine developed uniquely for animals to more than 70 zoos and dozens of academic institutions, conservatories, government organizations, and sanctuaries across the United States. According to an organizational release, the donated vaccine help protect wildlife animals that are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 such as lions, tigers, bears, and great apes.

“We believe healthier animals help create a healthier world, and we are committed to using our expertise in animal health to help solve sustainability challenges facing animals and people,” said Robert J. Polzer, PhD, Executive Vice President and President, Research and Development at Zoetis, in the release.

“The COVID-19 pandemic not only highlighted the important connection between animal health and human health, but it also demonstrated the need to be ready with solutions that can help prevent, detect and treat disease in human and animal health as part of a One Health approach.”

The vaccination by Zoetis is given on a case-by-case basis by the United States Department of Agriculture and by the appropriate state veterinarian. Since 2021, Zoetis has committed to donating over 16,000 additional vaccination doses to zoos and sanctuaries across the United States and beyond.
