In an effort to prevent the euthanasia of millions of companion animals every year, the American Humane Association launched a campaign, "Getting to Zero: Ending Euthanasia of Healthy & Treatable Animals." The group has collected best practices—including innovative spay and neuter programs; adoption, training, and foster care programs; and programs that transfer animals from overcrowded facilities to those with space and potential for adoption opportunities—from successful animal care and control organizations across the United States.
The next step: The organization is accelerating its efforts to gather funding that will help U.S. shelters replicate the best practices.
