
Dog with hind limb paralysis regains the ability to walk following months of rehabilitation
A 9-year-old male German Shepherd mix suffered a spinal cord injury likely due to a fibrocartilaginous embolism or intervertebral disc disease.
When a 9-year-old German Shepherd mix named Obi lost all movement in his hind limbs last fall, his prognosis was not certain. Today, he can stand on his own and take unassisted steps, a recovery his veterinary team at DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital in Portland, Oregon, attributes to preserved neurologic function at the time of injury and more than four months of structured rehabilitation.1
Sudden onset, uncertain cause
Obi presented to DoveLewis in November 2025 after developing acute hind limb paralysis. Neurologic examination localized the injury to the T3–L3 spinal cord region. The two most likely underlying diagnoses were fibrocartilaginous embolism and intervertebral disc disease, though a definitive cause was not confirmed.1
One factor working in Obi’s favor was the presence of deep pain sensation at the time of his initial evaluation, suggesting that some spinal cord pathways remained intact, DoveLewis said.1 Even so, the clinical picture remained guarded, and the pace and extent of recovery were difficult to predict.1
A rehabilitation plan built around gradual progress
In the early weeks, Obi’s care focused on supportive management, including pain control, urinary support, preservation of joint range of motion, prevention of muscle atrophy, and close monitoring for neurologic change. The first signs of improvement were subtle—voluntary tail movement returned, followed by mild motor activity that, according to DoveLewis, was most noticeable in the right hind limb.1
As rehabilitation progressed, Obi began to regain movement in his hind limbs. He was able to stand with assistance and gradually bear more weight, though he was not yet able to walk independently.
His care plan expanded alongside those improvements. A structured rehabilitation program incorporated underwater treadmill therapy, assisted mobility work, neuromuscular stimulation, and manual therapy, along with a home exercise regimen that advanced over time.
About two months after his injury, Obi could rise into a supported standing position and maintain it for several minutes. Strength, coordination, and stability continued to improve with ongoing therapy.
By March 2026, he had reached ambulatory paraparesis. The achievement “marked a major milestone in his recovery,” DoveLewis said in a news release.1
According to the hospital, Obi can now stand independently, take short unassisted steps, and actively participate in rehabilitation sessions. He also continues to show voluntary tail movement, and his strength and endurance continue to build.
What the case shows
Obi has not regained full neurologic function. Still, his progress “represents a meaningful gain in mobility and quality of life following a severe spinal cord injury,” according to DoveLewis.1
The hospital said the case points to the potential for continued functional improvement in dogs that retain deep pain sensation, highlighting the value of long-term, tailored rehabilitation.
“Obi’s journey has been a gradual but very real transformation,” Caitlin Clissold, CVT, CCRP, CSAMP, rehabilitation coordinator at DoveLewis, said in the hospital news release.1 “Seeing him standing, stepping, and engaging in daily life again has been incredibly rewarding—not just clinically, but for everyone involved in his care.”
