Irvine, Calif.

-- The Association for Women Veterinarians Foundation (AWVF) is sponsoring a one-time essay contest for U.S. veterinary students, offering a $500 cash prize and an additional $1,000 in travel funds for the winner to attend the 2010 AVMA convention in Atlanta.

Purpose of the contest is to honor the nation’s first female veterinarians, who graduated nearly 100 years ago, and to foster research in the history of veterinary medicine, the AWVF says.

Any current veterinary student, male or female, is eligible to submit an essay of 1,000 to 1,500 words on the general theme of “A century of women in veterinary medicine in the United States.” The author may modify his or her exact essay title.

Entries will become the property of the AWVF and must be postmarked by Jan. 30,2010. They must be double-spaced and well-referenced, with citations and a reference list. Four copies are to be submitted to Dr. Chris Stone Payne, AWVW awards committee chairperson, at 32205 Allison Dr., Union City, Calif. 94587.

For details about cover-letter requirements and other questions, contact Dr. Stacy Pritt at stacy.pritt@bbraun.com.
