Schaumburg, Ill.

-- The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has backed development of a comprehensive disease surveillance program to detect future outbreaks in United States swine herds.

While the outbreak of H1N1 did not significantly impact swine herds, the association reports that continued monitoring of emerging diseases is a key public-health issue. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the swine industry now are considering the creation of a surveillance program to meet animal and public health needs as they arise, and AVMA says it will support any effort for this initiative.

The resolution was approved by AVMA's Executive Board and the House Advisory Committee, and was introduced by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.
