SCHAUMBURG, ILL. —The American Veterinary Medical Association plans to release its latest U.S. pet ownership and demographics study by year's end. The report, billed as the most statistically accurate and complete survey of the pet-owning public, comes out every five years. In 2002, figures drawn from a survey of 54,000 households revealed 60 million pet dogs and 70 million pet cats in the United States. The report detailed number of veterinarian visits, expenditures on veterinary services and drilled down to reveal the household income, size and education level of pet owners.
