ITHACA, N.Y. — The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) plans to release a new version of its vaccines guidelines, not updated since 2000.

AAFP, the first veterinary medical group to outline guidance for practitioners on vaccine use, has formed a panel to update current material and consider new vaccines on the market for feline medicine. The new guidelines also will address vaccinating feral colonies and cats in shelters. Recognition of international differences regarding approval and regulations of vaccines is being considered, too, association spokesman Dr. Jim Richards says.

AAFP's goal is to have the first draft completed by year's end. Richards is scheduled to present the document during the North American Veterinary Conference, scheduled Jan. 7-11 in Orlando, Fla. The volunteer panel, made of 13 medical and industry experts, has sought no corporate sponsorship, Richards adds.
