3 ways to avoid electronic health records headaches

If your veterinary practice hasn’t already made the switch, it may be time to reconsider electronic health records. Electronic records allow you to get more complete information from several locations, says Tony Ryzinski, senior vice president of marketing for Sage Software Healthcare. Better information translates to better care. But before you jump in headfirst, take a look at Ryzinski’s top three considerations. Doing so may save you time, money—and your sanity.

1. Plan ahead

Implementing electronic health records takes time and focus. Clear the deck of other significant projects before tackling this major transition, Ryzinski says. And set realistic timetables. Once you have the software in place, you still need to account for training.

2. Expect costs

You shouldn’t buy and implement an electronic health records system without a financial plan, Ryzinski says. Make sure you understand your practice’s tolerance for debt and set up an internal payment schedule, he says.

3. Ease resistance

Make sure all veterinarians in your practice are on board. They may have reservations, but they must agree to commit to the change process, Ryzinski says. A tip: Put people with a positive attitude about the transition in leadership roles. And listen to feedback, Ryzinski says, even if it’s negative.
